Meaning
For thousands of years the signet was a seal: a crest or symbol cut into the flat face of a ring and pressed into wax to sign a letter, close a contract, or mark a decree. Pharaohs, Roman senators, and medieval lords wore theirs; the ring was authority made portable. Today the engraving is worn as identity, the mark you have chosen to answer to.
